Looking Forward

We had a great end of the year together, and I'm excited to enter the new year with such a great class!

I hope you were all able to make it to our music performance. The students were GREAT, singing their hearts out and impressing us all with their memorization of lines and parts! They made us all proud.

We also performed Jan Brett plays with our buddies. Each small group selected a Brett book and substituted her setting and animal characters with those found in the Columbia River Gorge. It was fun to see their creativity and acting skills come through.

Also with our buddies, we enjoyed an afternoon drinking hot chocolate while sharing class poems we composed. I will post our buddy class's poem here, as they had many sweet and funny descriptions of our classmates.

The last day of school also included a primary grade celebration of Jan Brett. We rotated classes and got to enjoy many of her titles, in addition to art, re-telling and role-playing activities.

I'm excited for the new year as we dive into geology and tourism studies related to the Columbia River Gorge. It's going to be a great year!

Jan Brett Author Study

This month we are immersed in Jan Brett books. What a talented author and illustrator she is! Her work is inspiring beautiful gingerbread houses, and performing our own versions of her books by substituting her settings and woodland creatures with those in the Columbia River Gorge.

Below are pictures from our gingerbread house decoration day. Enjoy!

Our carolers have been practicing daily for their upcoming musical debut! They will be performing next Wednesday night, December 15th, at 6:30pm. Please send your student directly to our classroom at 6:15pm. The performance will take place in the high school gym.

Mrs. Swanson asks that students dress in nice, celebrating the season type clothing.

Progress Notes

Progress Notes went home today! They should be carefully sealed and tucked away in your child's backpack, if not handed to you immediately after coming through the door today.

Lately

This week as I prepare to write progress notes, I'm reflecting on our year so far. I'm really enjoying our morning meeting time where we can meet as a group, recite poems, work on conventions through a morning message, meet a new Letterland Character, and discuss our day.

Our class is an active, artistic and musical bunch. Any opportunity to get up out of our seats and learn something tactile is welcomed. PE and music days (Tuesdays and Thursdays) are always exciting days for us. Art is a big part of our school day any day, with a focused lesson every Wednesday. Come by and see our beautiful Fall trees! They are stunning.

We're beginning a new study of nutrition, as we look at healthy eating and lifestyle through the resources of our beautiful Columbia River Gorge. The area we call home offers us abundant opportunities to eat healthy (fruit orchards and farmers markets) and live healthy (hiking and exercising). This week we're discussing the wide spectrum of the vegetable group, from french fries to spinach. I will be interested to see if students embrace healthier choices at home too!

Have a great rest of the week!

A Corbett Tradition

Kindergartners at Corbett get to experience a tradition dating back decades: Big Bear's Deli and Pumpkin Patch!

Students get to pick out a pumpkin and enjoy a snack at Big Bear's Deli. Even in typical Fall weather (pouring down rain) students had a great time!

A big thank you to Phil Dufresne, Balwant "Bullet" Bhullar and Barb Tobey for making this a memorable day for our kindergartners! Thanks to brave parents who came along and helped our muddy students enjoy their experience.

Pulling out of the school

"Look Ms. Tucker, I'm crossing my eyes!"

Can you sense the excitement?

It's raining and the mud is deep!

Enjoying a snack of apples, juice, cookies and popcorn!
