Oxbow

I'm so impressed with Oxbow field trips. We were taught how to walk like a fox, listen like a deer and see like an owl. If we could mimic these animals, other animals would let us see them!

Students rotated through 4 centers throughout the day. We got to build a lahar off the side of our sand replica of Mt Hood. (Lahar was a new word for us, ask your student if they can tell you what it is!).

We went on a nature walk where we contrasted the ancient and new forest, identified a lahar, and flood plains.

With the expert leading of our very own Mr. Vasen (Rowan's dad), we built streams on the banks of the Sandy. What would the water take with it? Where would it leave these items? How could we best help the water flow and not quickly absorb into the sand?

Finally, we partook in a rock sort. We sorted by luster, hardness, texture and color. The rocks were quite varied!

At the end of the field trip we were asked "who does Oxbow belong to?" Us! Please enjoy this beautiful park. There is so much to do, so much to see, and your student can be your guide.

3-D Fun!

Mathematicians this week explored 3D shapes, angles, faces and edges by building their own "3-D Cities", featuring cubes, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms, pyramids, to name a few. If you come by, check out their work in the commons!

Gifts of the Gorge

As experts of our natural resources in this beautiful place we call home, we're learning even more about the amazing Columbia River Gorge! Along with buddies, each group was given one gift (the river, the forest, plants, soil, tourism and fish) and worked together to collect new facts, uses and ways to preserve what we have.

Oxbow Field Study

We're going on a field trip!

On Wednesday, April 27th we'll be heading out to Oxbow Park for a day of geological discovery. We'll be investigating evidence of flood, volcanic debris, erosion and landforms, as part of the geologic story. This field trip was custom made by teachers and Oxbow naturalists and geologists, to compliment our study this year.

Forms went home Monday. Please be sure to turn them in no later than Tuesday, April 26th.

Jog-a-Thon
