Mural Art, Day #1

Today we had our first of four lessons on how to draw and paint salamanders and snakes of the Columbia River Gorge with our fantastic art volunteer Holly McCowen! We started by finding everyday shapes in what we see around us, starting with triangles in trees, hills and mountains, circles in clouds, etc.

Next we looked at our subject matter: snakes and salamanders! We saw a triangle head and mouth, crescent teeth, circular eyes and a "long squiggly line" for a body. Our rough drafts are done and tomorrow we will work to transfer our art to a tile for painting.

Thank you Lucy M and Sadie's moms for all of your help!

Terra Tempo

The authors of Terra Tempo (http://www.missoulafloodstory.com/), the graphic novel about the Missoula Floods, will be at Corbett next week. In anticipation for their arrival, our buddies read the novel to our class.

MLK

This art project was delayed due to a snow day, but I was impressed with the conversations that came out of it. We enjoyed the book Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King Jr. and had a great discussion about our country's recent history. I have an insightful, caring class.

Come check out our nearly 6 foot tall mural!

Others collect rocks...

We collect rocks in style! We begin our geology investigations next week, and in anticipation we painted egg cartons to collect rocks in. Our buddies will be helping us identify the rocks we collect, and we'll work together to do more fun things centered around our study. Stay tuned.

*Speaking of art, if you have any old shirts you could donate, I'm collecting for art smocks.

New Date!

Due to weather, our Corbett Schools Community Information Night is moved to THIS TUESDAY, January 18th, 7-9pm in the Multi-Purpose Building (MPB).

There will be a brief introduction by Superintendent Trani at 7pm. It will be a reception format to investigate issues and solutions at your own pace. You can arrive and leave any time you prefer between 7-9pm. You'll have opportunity to discuss options directly with Corbett teachers and administrators and Corbett School Board members.

We need your input, so please don't miss this opportunity to become informed and share your opinions with board members and staff. Even if you can only drop in for half an hour it will be well worth your time.

I'll see you there!

Stinky Clay

You might open up your student's backpack and be hit in the face with a stench.

It's STINKY CLAY!

As an introduction to measuring volume in Ms. Tucker's math class, we made up some stinky clay this week. *Idea borrowed from our Buddy Class :)

How To Make Stinky Clay

Introduction:
Stinky clay is really smelly clay dough. Each time you're finished playing with it, put it in something with a tight top. A coffee can will work well, or a plastic bag tied shut.

You'll need:
A big bowl, 3 tablespoons of baking powder, 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1 cup of flour, 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil, food coloring

Procedure:
Put the 3 tablespoons of baking powder into a bowl. Now add 1/2 cup of vinegar. Don't worry, it's supposed to fizz! Mix in 1 cup of flour and 1 tablespoon of oil. Smush the bumps with your fingers. Last of all, add a few drops of food coloring or paint. If your mixture is too dry, add water. IF it is too wet, add a little bit of flour. Mix well, until it's really stinky.

Conclusion:
Is your clay stinky enough? Probably! A lot of people are scared of stinky clay, but don't let this stop you from playing with it.
